Light armored gladiators
The Dimachaerus- These gladiators derive from the Greek word meaning 'bearing two swords'. They fought with two curved swords, the blade was about sixteen to eighteen inches. They wore a tight fitting helmet and leather wraps. The Eques- These gladiators would enter the arena on horseback. But they could always get off there horse and fight on foot. There weapons included a short, light throwing spear or a 27 inch straight sword. The equites were the first to fight in the gladiator games. There armor they wore was very unique, they wore a visored helmet, but didn't wear a head crest instead they had two feathers taken from a parrot, ostrich, peacock, or eagle. Also known to wear an arm guard called manica. The Essedari- These warriors fought in chariots and on foot. There weapons consist of a long 6 foot wooden spear with an iron tip. There armor came from the Celtics and had a decorated head crests. There defense was a hexagonal or oval shield. They got there name from a light 2 wheeled chariot the Celts used. |
